Be a Good Car Owner and Use Car Wax

I took my car to an auto detailing place the other day, and the guy in charge informed me that I had been neglecting my car for years. I felt wrongly accused. I adhere to all the requirements in my manual, take in the car for oil changes on schedule and keep it clean. The guy applying car wax, however, believed I was not so good. After he was finished with the car wax, he came over to give me an earful. “The paint is all oxidized. How could you let this happen?” I guess years of not using car wax is an offense so big, that I deserved public embarrassment. All the other car owners sitting and waiting for their cars peered at me over their newspapers. I have nothing but adoration for my car. I had no idea I had treated it so poorly. Luckily, I was saved by the guy who put my car wax on.

Car wax forms a protective layer on your car. Car wax is to car paint, as conditioner is to hair for a person. It gives a layer of protection from sun, rain and smog. In addition, it makes your car sparkle as if it were new and hides scratches. By using car wax on a routine basis, you can help the value of your car from depreciating as quickly. You do not have to go to a car detailing place like I did. After my little public scolding, I may choose to do it myself in the future. There are so many different kinds of car wax out there and they all are dependent upon how you apply them and when. When I took a look at a “Consumer Reports” snapshot of car wax, they concluded that the fancy ones do not perform any better than cheaper ones.

To properly apply car wax, your car should first be clean and dry. It is a good idea to check for any dirt that may be hiding in weird places before you start. If you start waxing over the grit, it could scratch your car. Make sure your car is not in the direct sun. Obviously, it should not be too cold out either. Use a non abrasive sponge or cloth to apply the car wax in circular motions. Keep track of where you have placed the wax. Once the areas of car wax have turned foggy, you can take it off. Rub the wax off in circular movements with a clean rag. Make sure you use a clean section of your cloth every time you move to a new spot, so you will not leave any residue. Once the car is done, stand back and admire. Although you may have to give your arm some rest and relaxation, you can take heart in knowing that you do not have to wax again anytime soon. You should use car wax every 3 months or so.
